Each character can be assigned one of two styles: Power emphasizes heavier damage, while Speed favors quick movement and intricate combo sequences. Battles also hinge on timing and strategy, with the Hajiki technique letting fighters deflect or repel incoming attacks. Players can further shape encounters by canceling super attacks into Desperation Moves, while Super Secret Skills and Super Desperation Moves provide especially elaborate offensive options.

The central loop is choosing a fighter and style, then using spacing, attacks, counters, combos, and special techniques to overcome opponents. Rather than following a stated character-progression system, the game focuses on mastering its varied combat tools and learning how each swordsman performs under the two styles. Online ranking features add a competitive record-keeping element, while quick save and load functions make it easier to resume play.
